This is the first time I'm going to log for Spec Ops - as limited as my ability is (nowhere near Potkettleblack), I thought I'd contribute some, especially for the people who have very limited time on the game and don't spend money on gold. Best case, it helps some of you guys. Worst case, it's a journal of my own :)

(Or worse still, you guys are going to get ahead of me and own me at PVP the next season. C'mon, cut some slack, willya? I already have a hard enough time getting to Gold League at level 175!)

So here goes the summary! I will update the rewards and the other stuff as soon as I see them, but I got the complete task list first for planning purposes :) I apologise that unlike other users who are much better at this than me, I haven't the faintest idea where to get all the nice pictures beside the tasks, so this is mainly going to be text. I also apologize that not all the details are there (e.g. rewards) because I'm rushing through the game and sometimes forget to take note. I try though! Boohoo.

EDIT: I've also duplicated the tasks for Master of Magnetism into the main task list, so that people can see what is going on. I'm doing both task lists at the same time, so this is going to be a tad longer than my usual Spec Ops. Might need the whole 27 days to get Magneto, depending on luck with the Comic Book Covers. For people who just want the Master of Magnetism task list by itself, scroll to the bottom or link the section in the contents.

(I've put my comments and thoughts to certain items in italics, for people who want them. I'll be splitting it into days that I completed it, but by no means should you be limited to my speed. Please note that I do this to try and help everyone, but I'm not insisting that you follow this plan or the thought process. I likely have less time than most players so I tend to think about the most efficient way to get through all the tasks, without running out of time, given that I have little game time. As such, I assume no responsibility for how you spend your CP, your Gold, or any other features that you might obtain in the game.)

UPDATE: I'll add the rewards and the comments as I complete them - if you don't see a reward (at least one without an apology for not noticing it) that means I haven't reached there yet! Given that' this Spec Ops seems rather ISO8 intensive and is going to need a lot of runs to get Magneto, I reckon this will be dragging on very slowly at the end, so watch out. :)

Spec Ops 6: Cry Havok

Hero reward: Havok (Blaster), earned by completing all Spec Ops tasks.

Additional Hero Reward: Magneto (Tactician), obtained by collecting all 8 comic book covers. Comic book covers can be obtained through Magnetic Lockboxes, which are obtained through either drops (?), deploy rewards or boss roulettes.

Goals

  1. Get Havok(duh, that's why we play the thing in the first place)
  2. Get Magneto (who wouldn't want to?)
  3. Get Gear, or at least as much as I can.
  • Now this Spec Ops Gear seems to be something I'd use to my playing style. I don't insist that everyone should get it, but I reckon that with the two heroes we have to get most of us would have a fighting chance to get some of them - unless your luck happens to be like mine :P

Some advice to all - I used to rush into the game and not think about it. It helps to see what tasks lay ahead so that you don't have to repeat an entire mission (costing you precious ISO-8 and Energy).

Task List (Havok)

Day 1

1. Club Hopping

  • Defeat 3 Hellfire Club Soldiers
    • Hellfire Club soldiers are the best mercenaries that money can buy. They can be found in Mission 1: Dragon's Kiss.
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: 30 XP
    • Pretty easy. Fight a battle with three Hellfire Soldiers. You can get this in your first battle, with a fight that's above Easy Difficulty. Try to use a distress call if you don't have any ready to be picked up for the next task.

2. Broadcast

  • Get 1 Distress Call
    • You can only receive Distress Calls by visiting allies. Add allies to help you win more battles.
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: ? (Sorry I didn't note it before - I just collected one and skipped on)
    • Freebie! Don't we all love them! Use a distress call if you don't have one ready to be picked up and then pick it up from your ally as soon as you can.

3. Villains for Hire

  • Defeat a Mini-Boss in Mission 1
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: 30 XP
    • The mini-bosses appear really fast on this mission, so this shouldn't be a problem. I recommend checking to see if Constrictor has Elite Hellfire with him, because you might want to avoid

4. Guns of the Elite

  • Defeat 3 Hellfire Club Elite Soldiers
    • Hellfire Elite soldiers are experts in squad based combat. They can be found in Mission 1: Dragon's Kiss.
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: ? (Sorry I didn't note the reward)
    • Check the battle before you start it - the normal Hellfire Soldier's don't count! Don't do this on the Dragoness Boss Fight, because your next task is...

5. Dragonfire

  • Defeat Dragoness
    • Dragoness is the Boss of Mission 1: Dragon's Kiss.
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: 1 CP
    • NOW you can kill her.

6. Capstone

  • Research the Pyramidion in the Lab
    • Duration: 8h
    • Cost: 100 Silver & 60 Unstable Iso-8
    • Research the Pyramidion to complete this task.
  • Requires 20 gold to skip
  • Reward: Pyramidion
    • This is a good setup for a recharge. I highly reccomend not playing the Spec Ops during these 8 hours'. Feel free to farm CP if you need it for the upcoming Epic Boss deploys! (See Task 25, and Task 6 of the next section for Magneto)

7. Shattered

  • Use Havok's Shattering Punch 3 times
    • Shattering Punch is Havok's first ability, which applies Melt Armor. Havok is a Team-Up in all Spec Op 6 Missions.
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: 10 Lockboxes
    • This is easy. Find a mission with Havok, and use the skill three times. Doesn't even require any Stamina! Except it's not so easy and I got Havok killed, so I had to do another battle with him in it. Ran through the whole Mission 1 to do this, so that I don't overdo it and miss Avalanche on the next task.
    • You can replay Mission 1 again for this, to get a higher ranking of stars. We're going to need the four stars for Magneto's stuff anyway. I'm not sure if going straight to Mission 2 is going to help, if you get any other bosses before Avalanche in the next task. Besides, if you don't already have two stars, you're going to need it to clear Task 9. I highly recommend doing Mission 1 again for this, before going onto Mission 2, so that Task 8 and 10 go smoothly, and you're more set up for the 4-starring task for the Magnetic Lockboxes later on.
    • Here was also when the Tasks for Master of Magnetism came up for me - not sure if it's the same for everyone, but because of that I took an inefficient route and ended up doing Mission 1 yet again, for a grand total of 3 times on the first run. No prizes for guessing that I leveled up and used energy items in the process - what's a guy to do when he's got limited game time per day?

1. Master of Magnetism - No Mercy

  • Defeat 10 Hellfire Club Soldiers
    • Hellfire Club soldiers are the best mercenaries that money can buy. They can be found in Mission 1.
  • Requires 15 gold to skip
  • Reward: 8 Lockboxes
    • As mentioned, I repeated Mission 1 yet another time, with all the deploys, to complete this and to get some lockboxes. This got me to three and a half stars in Mission 1, clearing Task 9 ahead of time. Dragoness counts as a mutant, the first for Master of Magnetism Task 2.

8. Bad Vibrations

  • Defeat Avalanche
    • Avalanche is a Mini-Boss in Mission 2: Brotherhood In Arms
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: 1000 silver (? - didn't see the amount properly)
    • Started Mission 2, and went to the miniboss. Avalanche also counts as a mutant so this was part of the Master of Magnetism Task 2. Two down, three to go, which will be cleared in the Mystique boss fight.

9. Mission Accomplished

  • Get 2 Stars of Mastery in Mission 1
    • Complete missions to add points to your cumulative score. Achieve a high enough score to earn a new Mastery Star!
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: 2000 silver
  • Already cleared!

10. New Leader of the Brotherhood

  • Defeat Mystique
    • Mystique is a Boss of Mission 2: Brotherhood In Arms.
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: 3000 silver
    • At this point, I was on Task 2 for Master of Magnetism, and cleared it with the Mystique + Juggernaut + Sabretooth battle.

2. Master of Magnetism - Brotherhood Hunt

  • Defeat 5 Mutants
    • Toad, Blob, Juggernaut, Sabretooth, Dragoness, Mystique, and the Living Pharaoh are all mutants.
  • Requires 15 gold to skip
  • Reward: 8 Lockboxes
    • With Dragoness and Avalanche cleared earlier on, these three did the trick. I liked the dynamics in the boss battle, where you had to avoid being countered or being protected against your attacks.

11. Weapons of the Ancients

  • Upgrade Acinaces to Spatha in the Lab
    • The Spatha can be researched after acquiring the Acinaces.
  • Requires: ? (Sorry I didn't note. I think it was 100 silver and 120 ISO-8. Correct me if I'm wrong.)
  • Requires 20 gold to skip
  • Reward: Spatha. Duh.
    • Started on this, takes 1 day to complete. Will spend time farming CPs, and getting ready to tackle Task 3 in Master of Magnetism, which requires defeating the Epic Boss in Mission 2. For that, you'll need Nightcrawler, Phoenix (the icon shows her in her White Crown uniform, but I'm not sure if that's required) and three other heroes to deploy.

Personal thoughts:

That's the end of Day 1, since the second research task tends to take about 12 hours to complete. We'll see what happens the next day! Given that I ran three rounds of Mission 1 (currently on 3 stars and a half), and am in the process of clearing Mission 2, I'm down to 121 ISO-8, due to all the gifts and collecting random drops. I've also collected two comic books covers - had a third, but it was a repeat, and I'm guessing it's going to get a lot harder the more you collect, if the selection is random as they claim.

Looking at the tasks ahead, I'm not looking forward to the research tasks and the collection of the Lockboxes in particular. The former is going to take a bit of luck + time to get enough to conduct the research, and the latter is going to be pure luck. Unfortunately, I've never been really good at luck. I'm also not looking forward to doing the PVP battles because it potentially means that my ranking can drop (I'm at diamond's borderline, and I consistently drop into gold or lower while AFK), so I'm hoping that practice battles count as they used to in the last few Spec Ops.

It's just day one, so to paraphrase Potkettleblack: "Don't panic - there's enough time for that later".

Day 2

Remember to click on the research button first to clear Task 11!

12. Catch the Wave

  • Use Havok's Plasma Wave 3 times
    • Plasma Waves is Havok's second ability, which causes Burning and removes the buffs from enemies. Havok is a Team-Up in all Spec Op 6 Missions.
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: ?
    • Did this along with Magneto's Task to kill the Living Pharoah. Not that difficult a battle, but if you want to play safe I think bringing Beast is a good choice for the counterattacking abilities. I set up the flight missions here, before I went to do the next task. Nearly didn't clear it on the first try because Beast suddenly hit him hard and he almost died before I could execute the final Plasma Wave.

3. Master of Magnetism - End of the Pharaoh

  • Defeat the Living Pharaoh
    • The Living Pharaoh is the Epic Boss of Mission 2. HINT: Participate in Deploys as soon as they appear.
  • Required heroes for Mission 2 Epic Boss, Living Pharoah: Nightcrawler, Phoenix, and three any hero.
  • Requires 30 gold to skip
  • Reward: 16 Lockboxes
    • See above task.

13. Neighborhood Watch

  • Complete 5 Deploys
    • Deploy heroes to advance through a mission. Deploys reward items and powerups.
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: 1 CP + Spec Ops Mission 3 Unlocked
    • These can be done in other missions - good for saving ISO-8. Thanks to PKB for the tip.

14. Jet Set

  • Complete 5 Flight Deck Missions
    • Send any hero on any flight deck mission.
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: ?
    • Freebie! Set this up before you do your deploys, and by the time you're done you should be done with this task too.

15. Versus

  • Fight 5 PVP Battles
    • Compete in PVP to test your skills against other players. PVP requires completing Chapter 1 Mission 4 of Story Mode.
  • Requires 20 gold to skip
  • Reward: ?
    • Practice Battles work, but if you see the need to rank up in PVP, go ahead!

16. Weapons of the Future

  • Upgrade the Radian Pistol to the Radian Rifle in the Lab
    • The Radian Rifle can be researched after acquiring the Radian Pistol.
  • Requires 120 ISO-8 and 300 silver
  • Requires 20 gold to skip
  • Reward: Radian Rifle + 1000 Silver
    • Set it running, it'll last two days. In the meantime, I'll pick off 15 normal sentinels on a normal mission (I did it on 8-4) for Master of Magnetism Task 4, and then do the next 10 M-Series Sentinel for the following task, which will help me clear Task 17 and 18 at the same time (hopefully!).
    • Edit: I made a mistake. Mission 2 doesn't have M-series Sentinels. Bummer. Should have just run Mission 2 anyway instead of doing 8-4.

4. Master of Magnetism - Bot Buster

  • Defeat 15 Sentinels
    • Sentinels are built for destroying mutants. They can be found in Mission 2: Brotherhood In Arms.
  • Requires 20 gold to skip
  • Reward: 8 Lockboxes
    • Honestly, I did this because I was slightly bored of farming for CP so I thought I'd go try clearing a task just to quell the boredom of the 48 hour long research task. This can be done outside the Spec Ops, in any mission with Sentinels. I did mine in 8-4. In retrospect I should have done it in Mission 2 of the Spec Ops. Gonna pump an Energy "bar" and do that right away. Running this to the end, including Epic Boss, gives me a 2 Star Mastery on Mission 2 (barely - I'm still amazed at how PKB does 4 stars so easily) - so now the tricky part that remains is really how do I efficiently clear the rest of the tasks, while aiming for 4 stars on all missions...

Personal Thoughts

The next days look like the limitations are going to be largely ISO-8 and Energy, with all the star requirements. I'm going to stop logging per day here, because this is where everyone kind of goes their own paths depending on how much ISO-8 you have at this point of time - so there will be people who progress really really fast (if you get a lucky spot on the Daily Bonus, or if you spend Gold for ISO-8), or there will be people who are limited to what the gifts each day get them. In particular, I think the Epic Boss run and the 4-starring all missions are going to the be the ones that are just going to require pure grinding and not much else. I'll be doing all the deploys as much as I can, primarily to get the lockboxes. I haven't had much luck with getting any weapons from roulettes, drops, daily bonuses or in the Lockboxes, which is rather disappointing at this point of time, seeing as I meet a considerable number of people in PVP that have stuff which is clearly obtained from the lockboxes and roulettes; I can only hope my luck will get better! At the very least, I have 4 out of 8 comic books and I hope that my luck won't carry on to give me repeat comic book covers (I've already had one)!

The gameplay of this Spec Ops, the way the bosses are laid out and the tactics required have gotten me psyched for the rest of it. The heroes, not so much. The fact that the PVP tournament is going to end soon, even less, because that's what's really burning me out at this point of time, trying to maintain at diamond league. How other people manage to simply float on their own to diamond without fights is beyond me.

That being said, I'm stuck with almost zero ISO-8 at this point of time, even after the research task. I'm contemplating doing the M-Series Sentinels in a normal mission so as to save on it, and just pile up the ISO-8 to grind later. As for the Comic Covers, I've got 5 covers and 2 dupes so far! Not too shabby, considering the Math on the Lockboxes (under certain assumptions outlined in the post) says that at this point I have less than 10% chance of having all :P

Day 3 (and beyond)

Ok technically it's Day 4 (or 5, depending on how you count it) because of the wait for the research, but here we go! 17. Magneto's Legacy

  • Defeat 10 M-Series Sentinels
    • The M-Series Sentinel was repurposed by Magneto to eliminate "Norms" instead of mutants. They can be found in Mission 3: Cosmic Forces.
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: 100 XP
  • PKB has confirmed that you can't do this in the normal missions, and recommends that you run Mission 3 to normal completion, then to Epic the second time round. Given his strategies and the caliber of his mind, I'd say follow him, unless you have tons of ISO-8 to spare!
  • I really don't have enough ISO-8 so this task is going to take a few days to complete, but by that time...

18. Binary System

  • Get 2 Stars of Mastery in Mission 2
    • Complete missions to add points to your cumulative score. Achieve a high enough score to earn a new Mastery Star!
  • Requires 20 gold to skip
  • Reward: 3000 Silver
  • If you've been following the plan, you would have already had this - and currently in the middle of Mission 3, given that there are only 9 M-Sentinels in MIssion 3, which sets us up for...

19. Plasma Donation

  • Use Havok's Plasma Spheres 3 times
    • Plasma Spheres is Havok's fourth ability, which causes Dizzy and Slowed in all enemies. Havok is a Team-Up in all Spec Op 6 Missions.
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: 100 XP
  • Did this on the Toad Miniboss, which frees up time for the next few task, and if you're lucky your deploys will also clear your Lockboxes task. Preferably team up with someone who can replenish Stamina, otherwise use items to clear the attacks fast (cookies?).
  • You might have to play through the whole Mission 3 another time, to do the last three tasks. 'If you can, don't collect all your daily gifts just yet, so you can do that for the task.
  • I actually think I might have to do it more than one more time, and then I'll still have to deal with the 4-star tasks.

20. Victory

  • Win 3 PVP Battles
    • Compete in PVP to test your skills against other players. PVP requires completing Chapter 1 Mission 4 of Story Mode.
  • Requires 30 gold to skip
  • Reward: ? (oops sorry)
  • No explanation needed. Can be done on Practice, but we're in the middle of a tourney anyway.

21. Instability

  • Collect 20 Unstable Iso-8
    • Unstable Isotope-8 can be found in normal combat, as well as rewards from deploys and boss fights. You can also get some from your friends!
  • Requires 20 gold to skip
  • Reward: ? (damn, I should really keep an eye out for these)
  • Went on to Epic Boss of Mission 3: Green Goblin. Because...

5. Master of Magnetism: 'Green and Mean'

  • Defeat Green Goblin
    • Green Goblin is the Epic Boss in Mission 3. HINT: Participate in Deploys as soon as they appear.
  • Requires 40 gold to skip
  • Reward: 16 Lockboxes
  • This was the only way I managed to complete the next task. Yaboo.

22. Collector

  • Collect 10 Lockboxes
    • Collect lockboxes to unlock Magneto as a playable hero. They can be earned from lockbox sidequests, or won from deploys or Spec Op 6 bosses.
  • Requires 20 gold to skip
  • Reward: 4000 Silver
  • I did this by doing the previous task, as I wasn't able to get any other Lockboxes, which meant replaying the whole Mission 3 for the next task.

23. New Kingdom

  • Defeat the Living Monolith
    • The Living Monolith is the Boss of Mission 3: Cosmic Forces.
  • Requires 10 gold to skip
  • Reward: ? (oops)

24. Special Operative

  • Complete 3 Stars of Mastery in all Spec Ops 6 Missions
    • Complete missions to add points to your cumulative score. Achieve a high enough score to earn a new Mastery Star!
  • Requires 25 gold to skip
  • Reward: 5000 silver
  • This shouldn't take too long, if you have the ISO8 and you've been doing the rest of the tasks properly.

25. Hidden Nightmare

  • Defeat Green Goblin
    • Green Goblin is the Epic Boss in Mission 3: Cosmic Forces. HINT: Participate in Deploys as soon as they appear.
  • Requires 25 gold to skip
  • Reward: 1 Command Point

And there you have it - Cry Havok!

Task List (Magneto) - Master of Magnetism

(Note that completing this task list does not necessarily get you Magneto - it does, however, give you a heck lot of Magnetic Lockboxes, so you have a fighting chance at it. The tasks here unlocked for me when I completed Task 7 of the Havok Tasklist, but I'm not sure if that's for everyone.)

1. Master of Magnetism - No Mercy

  • Defeat 10 Hellfire Club Soldiers
    • Hellfire Club soldiers are the best mercenaries that money can buy. They can be found in Mission 1.
  • Requires 15 gold to skip
  • Reward: 8 Lockboxes

2. Brotherhood Hunt

  • Defeat 5 Mutants
    • Toad, Blob, Juggernaut, Sabretooth, Dragoness, Mystique, and the Living Pharaoh are all mutants.
  • Requires 15 gold to skip
  • Reward: 8 Lockboxes

3. End of the Pharaoh

4. Bot Buster

  • Defeat 15 Sentinels
    • Sentinels are built for destroying mutants. They can be found in Mission 2: Brotherhood In Arms.
  • Requires 20 gold to skip
  • Reward: 8 Lockboxes

5. Green and Mean

  • Defeat Green Goblin
    • Green Goblin is the Epic Boss in Mission 3. HINT: Participate in Deploys as soon as they appear.
  • Requires 40 gold to skip
  • Reward: 16 Lockboxes

6. Completionist

  • Complete 4 Stars of Mastery in all Spec Ops 6 Missions
    • Complete missions to add points to your cumulative score. Achieve a high enough score to earn a new Mastery Star!
  • Requires 50 gold to skip
  • Reward: 32 Lockboxes

Update: 17 Feb 2013

Looks like i won't be farming for the 4 stars because I got lucky on my deploys and got 10 lockboxes (over several deploys) and UNLOCKED MAGNETO!

  • cue fanboy nerd moment*

Total lockboxes opened: 123 (what a nice number.)

Considering the math down on Wearingglasses' post, I think I got on the lucky side. PKB had to open quite a few more. So don't despair if you haven't already gotten it - it's really a chance game, and apparently Playdom has done something to ensure that people have higher chances when you have less covers - so your last cover will be a better than 12.5% chance.

I'm still going to be playing on for 4 starring everything (at least) but there's no pressure anymore. The rest of the dropboxes I'll open one by one and I would hope out of 32 from the final task (if I do get there) will be enough to get me something of significant value, because so far all I've gotten is ISO8 and the occasional CP!

Now on to the PVP...
