Or... How I Got My Favourite Character Added to
Marvel: Avengers Alliance

I started playing MAA in April 2012. I entered the game hoping to make an all female team and after entering the game I felt confronted by the imbalance of female characters.

Why are most of the female characters squeezed into the Infiltrator Class? And lets face it; if guys want to have an all-guy team, then being forced to take Spider Man doesn't suck.

And at the time I started playing, there were NO female 90 CP heroes.

So, doubting that the developers would change the make-up of Ms Marvel and/or Phoenix to make them 90 CP characters, I went to the Playdom Forum for MAAA and started championing the addition of more female heroes in the hope that as the game develops, we would see not only the addition of more female heroes, but also the addition of a female 90 point hero as well.

Subtle. Isn't it. ; )

A short time after I joined the forum, I made a Sig Graphic that promoted that addition of a female 90 CP hero (with a subtle suggestion as to who I thought would be a good choice), knowing that this would be at the bottom of every post I ever made in the forum, thus infinitely improving the chances of my cause being seen by the developers.

When I saw Keyote's fantastic thread, Top 10 Characters You-d Like to See in the Game Next... despite my strong desire to vote for Gambit I took this as an opportunity to vote for the women I'd like to see added. I mean, if I'm going to complain about the lack of female characters in the game the least I can do is to come up with a list of suggestions... right?

As it turned out, I had to cut some characters from my list to comply with Keyote's limit of ten votes per person. I was sure that there must have been others that I haven't thought of, and decided that a good way to raise the profile of my cause was to create a thread to generate discussion. Which female heroes would you like to see added to the game?

Later, I took a page out of Keyote's book and added a Tally to the thread to keep the thread active, and I added a link to the thread in my Sig file.

My thread became quite popular with people contibuting votes and discussing the representation (or under-represenation) of women in computer games. There were some misogynistic wankers that made a brief appearance to Troll, but they got the repsonse they deserved from Forum users and thus prompty fell silent. But for the most part, it was quite positive.

Two months later, we had the addition of one male and two female heroes (one of which was, Scarlet Witch, our first female 90CP Hero).

When the Developers heavily hinted that Rogue would be coming out I had an insatiable grin on my face for DAYS, and despite my best efforts I've been feeling very smug ever since. My "not so subtle" sig graphic spamming every thread with my cause(s) has paid off. In two months since I first started playing and since I joined this forum, we've had the addition and/or announcement of the addition of:

  1. Mockingbird
  2. Scarlet Witch (90CP)
  3. Rogue
  4. White Queen
  5. Tigra
  6. Magik
  7. Valkyrie

  1. Black Panther (90CP)
  2. Havok
  3. Beast
  4. Gambit
  5. Quicksilver

Guess they're making the Deadpool and Psylocke fans wait for a bit longer, but good things come to those that wait (and are willing to dedicate their Sig space to a cause).

The 7:5 female:male ratio has me absolutely thrilled! And I was careful to say a big "THANK YOU" to the Developers for taking everything that had been posted in my "more female heroes" thread on board. I never expected an instant fix, but this is exactly the sort of steps towards some gender equality in the game that rocks my world.

So, as it turns out... The forum is an excellent way to make a request to the developers. You just have to be committed enough to spam everyone with your cause in your Sig Graphic and to maintain a thread like the one I created to maintain it's prominence in the forum. If you have a cause that you want to champion, or if there is a character that you want to see added to the game, never doubt your power as a consumer: champion your cause, try to keep all of your posts positive, don't be a Troll, and maybe your favourite character will be added to the game too.

My new, celebratory Sig after the release of Rogue
