Ever since Cable was the second PVP hero, people who are largely bad at simple counting have been making the fairly uninformed claim that the game is or is becoming the X-Men Alliance.
This post breaks down the roster to disabuse these people of that erroneous notion. There's no two ways about it. These people are way off base.
The Roster Breakdown
I broke down the roster into three categories: Avengers, X-Men, and Independents. Since the question is Avengers Alliance vs X-Men Alliance, I thought that was the only relevant category.
This category includes characters who have been members of any team in the three main X-Books (X-Force, X-Factor, and all iterations of X-Men). I did not include Excalibur as an X-Book, even though it was started by Chris Claremont, as it was always a half mutant, half non-mutant team. The only person in the count this current changes is Captain Britain. It doesn't have a huge, skewing effect on the numbers.
- Kitty Pryde
- Emma Frost
- Omega Sentinel
That's it. 26 X-men. Add Captain Britain and you have 27. Add the other mutant Avengers (Scarlet Witch) as they were originally X-villains and you have 27 or 28 depending on how you count Cap B. Count the Uncanny Avengers who aren't mutants, which is a stretch, and you can add Wonderman, Captain America, Thor, Wasp, which gets you another four... your maximum generous count of X-characters is 32. I believe that 26 is the fair count, but you could make increasingly shaky arguments to increase the count up to 32.
Membership in any Avengers team that is real mainstream continuity, and not 10 minutes old (Mighty Avengers V2, not that it affects the team roster). For the ones that are more questionable, I will provide evidence.
- Iron Man
- Black Widow
- Captain America
- Daredevil (New Avengers v2 #16)
- Dr. Strange (New Avengers v2 #7... New Avengers v3)
- Invisible Woman (joined in Avengers #300 during the Inferno Event)
- Iron Fist (New Avengers v2 #1)
- Luke Cage (New Avengers v1 #3... leader of New Avengers v2)
- Mr. Fantastic (Avengers #300, New Avengers currently)
- Ms. Marvel
- Thing (First in West Coast Avengers v2 #9, later in New Avengers)
- War Machine
- Wolverine (New Avengers v2)
- Black Panther
- Scarlet Witch
- Rogue (Uncanny Avengers #4)
- Beast (Avengers #137, Secret Avengers, currently New Avengers v3)
- Valkyrie (Secret Avengers v1 #1)
- Havok (Uncanny Avengers #1)
- Captain Britain (Secret Avengers #22)
- Hank Pym
- Black Knight
- Red Hulk (Avengers v4 #12)
- Ares (Mighty Avengers #1)
- Squirrel Girl (Great Lakes Avengers... New Avengers as Luke Cage's nanny)
- Black Bolt (Currently in New Avengers)
Thirty-Nine. That is the conservative count. I can get this up a bit if you count Avengers individual books as Avengers books by including Sif and Rescue. I think that's justified by I did not include them to produce the most conservative number possible. I would add Thane since he's been introduced in New Avengers and Infinity, which is an Avengers book, but since he has yet to appear as Thane in any team, it is premature. I omitted Storm as well, as she was only an Avenger for 5 issues. Constrictor was an instructor at the Avengers Academy, but I did not count him as it happened during Dark Reign. So, if we're being generous, I could get this number from 39 to 44.
If we were really generous, we could count Defenders and FF as Avengers, and add Angel and Human Torch. That's a bridge further than rational consideration, even though the Defenders were part of the Avengers side of Marvel (and have had interlocking membership) and everyone else in FF has been an Avenger, and Jim Hammond was also a West Coast Avenger as the Human Torch.
This is the smallest group, consisting of characters who are not easily tied to either organization:
- Human Torch
- Ghost Rider
- Union Jack
- Daimon Hellstrom
Hellstrom has appeared in multiple Avengers books and done multiple teamups, Thundra belongs with Hulk, who is an Avenger book, Sif and Rescue and Constrictor have been discussed. Thunderbolts are not technically Avengers, and DD isn't technically an Avengers book, so Elektra is an indy.
There are no fewer than 39 Avengers characters in the game, but the strictest accounting
There are no more than 32 X-Men (many of whom are also Avengers), by the most absurdly liberal accounting.
By conservative counting, the score is 39 Avengers to 26 X-Characters. It is AVENGERS Alliance. Don't convince yourself otherwise. It always has been Avengers Alliance, and probably always will be so.
