How They Work
Edit
| Item: | Disadvantages: | Advantages: |
|---|---|---|
| The Pawn | No offensive capabilities | Prevents harm to the agent, replenishes ammunition |
| The Rook | High stamina cost, Cannot be used without ammunition | High damage, Hits until ammunition is depleted |
| The Knight | Puts agent in harm's way | Protects team, Maximizes opportunities for counter-attack, Increases damage dealt by energy weapons, Counter-attacks occasionally, Can be used manually |
| The Bishop | Cannot be used manually, Must counter-attack, Low damage | Restores stamina and ammunition, Always counter-attacks |
The Chess Set is, so far, the simplest of the gear sets released. Like all gear sets, each item works best when used in tandem with the other three. The main goal of the Chess Set is to keep The Rook fully loaded between turns to maximise the damage with each use. The Rook is a potent weapon with very high damage that can fire a maximum of three times per use. It also has no cooldown or negative effect on the agent, but has an incredibly high stamina cost and cannot be used if it has no ammo. The main method of keeping it loaded is The Bishop. Despite it's depressively low damage, The Bishop is essential, as it restores stamina and provides ammunition for The Rook. As it counters %100 of the time, the Agent should never have a shortage of ammo available. Unfortunately, The Bishop can never be used manually, and is entirely dependant on counterattacks. This is the bare minimum loadout for the Chess Set to function, but in order to get the most effectiveness out of the set, the loadout must include The Knight. Unlike the first two items, The Knight can be used on it's own without using rook ammunition. As such, it is a decent backup weapon, should the Agent go a whole round without recharging The Rook. However, the real strength of The Knight is it's permanent protect status. This maximizes the chances for The Bishop to counter, ensuring a steady supply of ammo for The Rook. Likewise, The Knight has it's own separate counterattack (albeit, not as frequent as The Bishop) and applies Radiation Exposure to boot. Since The Rook and The Bishop are energy type weapons, they both deal extra damage to targets previously hit by The Knight. The final item in the set is The Pawn. The main use of the pawn is to offer an alternative method of collecting rook ammunition to The Bishop. It can be used once every turn to apply a medium-strength shield to the Agent and grant one rook ammo. It also applies a permanent Defensive Experiment status, increasing the Agent's defense stat with every hit (as opposed to every attack); this ability benefits from The Knight's protect effect, while The Pawn likewise mitigates the risk of putting the Agent in harm's way with said protect effect.
While the Chess Set was effective when it was first released, advancements in the game have rendered it problematic to use. It's complete dependance on The Bishop's counter and The Knight's protect mean it can be thwarted by applying Off-balance and Cornered, preventing those effects from being used.
