S.H.I.E.L.D. PERSONNEL BRIEF: Spider-Man
Nationality: Unknown (voice analysis suggests American)
Criminal Record: Numerous outstanding warrants for his arrest on unproven charges.
Powers: Super-strength and agility, some form of danger sense (see observations), wall-crawling.
Unique Weapons: “Web-shooters” of unknown origin that fire a powerful adhesive.
Known History: Spider-Man is a mystery to the intelligence community and for some time which side of the law he was truly on was unknown, thanks in no small part to the relentless media campaign waged against him by Daily Bugle publisher (and now New York City mayor), J. Jonah Jameson. But his defeat of such menaces as Doctor Octopus, the Lizard, Sandman, Venom and others have proven him a true friend to the city. Captain America invited him to join the Avengers, and he, with some apparent reluctance, accepted.
Observations: “Is Spider-Man a mutant? I’ve asked myself that question time and again but I believe the answer must be no. Cerebro has never detected his presence. I have peered just deep enough into this young man’s thoughts to know his intentions are pure. There is a deep sadness in him, but it drives him to do good, rather than evil, which is a rare and valuable thing in this world.
“It is true that the way he dodges his enemy’s attacks indicates some form of precognition or even telepathy, but that does not in itself indicate the presence of the X-Gene. “He could have gotten his powers by being struck by lightning for all I know.”— Prof. Charles Xavier
“No way, sorry, I’m not telling you SHIELD guys my quote-unquote ‘origin.’ Or my real name. I have people I love I’m trying to protect. Why else would I wear this mask? I don’t know if you noticed, but the modest type I ain’t.
“I’m just some guy who learned the hard way that with great power comes great responsibility. Every day I discover a new reason that’s true.
“And that’s all I hope you ever find out about me.”— Spider-Man
