TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN FICTION: THE INCREDIBLE CASE OF THE GREY GARGOYLE! By Dick Jones … THE PHANTOM REPORTER! Special to the Bugle
In the incredible annals of crime and chemistry - two disciplines connected at the hip, in this reporter’s not-so-humble opinion - one name springs to mind whenever one needs a tragic example of humanity’s quest for knowledge and power gone horribly awry. That name is…the Grey Gargoyle!
Perhaps it wasn’t the first name that sprang to your mind, dear reader, but as a long-time reporter on the super-crime beat I can say with some authority that if you don’t know the piteous story of Paul Pierre Duval, you should - if only to remind you that science can be deadly!
Monsieur Duval was a French chemist of some renown who grew a bit too careless with his research. Having spilled a quantity of some curious chemical concoction on his hand, he watched in horror as the very flesh of his hand transformed into living stone! In a twist reminiscent of old King Midas, Duval discovered that anything he touched with this living hand of rock would itself turn to stone, although this effect was not permanent. Likewise, he could extend the living-stone effect to the entirety of his body, becoming nigh-invulnerable in the process! Did this man of science turn his hand to rock music, or perhaps delicious rock candy for the children of Paris? No, he turned to crime!
The Gallic Guttersnipe had many misadventures in crime before falling off the global radar. Rumors persist that he is in the custody of SHIELD, perhaps not far from this very city. Rest assured that if anyone does learn the fate of the Grey Gargoyle, your Phantom Reporter will be first with the news as always!
